Trying New Things

Like most of you, this last week was a bit tough. Having to “shelter in place” doesn’t change my routine too much most days, just replaces the one day a week that we would go do things with friends. But the idea that I need to shelter in place still looms over my head. And I have the feeling this whole COVID thing is going to negatively effect our house building timeline. So…I have been eyeing houses on the market, even though it isn’t likely we would buy one. I just don’t like feeling trapped without a yard.

That being said, other then my mental gymnastics, this week went well. We’re testing out some of the curriculum that recently became free. We’ve enjoyed Doodling with Mo, playing bells with Prodigies, doing math with Dreambox and ST Math, and learning some science through Scholastics free lessons. The main parts we’ve kept the same has been Bible and Ari’s basics of Math, Spelling, Reading and Handwriting. We also made it over to the Sacramento river one more time and Daddy’s spring break started at the end of our week so we get to have him home too!

We tied the hula hoop to the dog crate so Cas could practice shooting hoops.
Ari made this Chinese fan with her Atlas Kit on China. It included real ink, a paintbrush and rice paper and the frame. She drew the design on the rice paper and then glued it to the frame to make her fan. Of course then you must dress up to make it all complete.
Cas built this fort all by himself and was very proud of himself.
Taking a break from school to cuddle Jedi.
Cas moved the tunnel up on the bed by himself and then played inside with his stuffed friends for quite a while.
Building a new fort with daddy!
Cas has a mop that’s his size but he really wanted to try out my mop this time.
Enjoying Prodigies! We already had 2 sets of bells so it works out great! And during Cas’s nap, Ari also does some of the recorder lessons.
Scholastic had a unit on bunnies. The activity at the end was to mark out how far different animals can jump…
And then see how many of our jumps it took to cover the same distance. Kids loved this.
Enjoying nature by the river.
Cas suddenly decided he wanted to draw me a picture. He got all the supplies out himself!
Ari peeking out of the fort.
This is Cas’s favorite hiding spot for hide and seek!
Ari has many favorite hiding spots, this is one.
While Daddy and Cas napped after church, Ari and I painted pictures to send to elderly relatives.
Here is one that I did.

That was our week! We’re also trying to find ways to help our communities while life is crazy. I recorded a Sabbath School lesson and uploaded it for the weekend. As shown above, we painted pictures to send to relatives and we’ve been calling relatives we haven’t been in touch with as much. We’re also looking into supporting local restaurants even though we don’t usually eat out, and how best to support our local churches and health care workers. What have you been doing to reach out?

  1. Here’s what we’re doing to reach out:
The kids wrote letters to friends. I’m trying to text 5-10 friends per day to check in. Also, sharing fun resources and ideas as much as possible. We order food from a local mom-and-pop restaurant once a week. We offered to swap books, puzzles, and games with the neighbors on either side of our rental house and across the street. My husband gave about 6 houses on our street his number in case anyone needs groceries or medication and doesn’t feel like going to the store.

Have a fun spring break!! 😊
