Goals for 2020 Revisited

Lets take a look at the goals I made for this last year…back before I knew what was coming and see how I did. Then I can move ahead and make new goals…must be honest…I’m making fewer goals for the year ahead. I’ll make comments on each goal in bold.

It’s not only a new year, it’s a new decade! A lot has happened in the last decade! I worked as a case manager and then as the teaching principal of a one room school. My husband and I paid off all our school loans and bought our first house. We had 2 lovely children and I quit working to stay home with them. We made the decision to homeschool and I started homeschooling our oldest. My husband switched from teaching elementary school to teaching high school. And we ended with a bang. Our whole town including our home and the school my husband taught at burned. We are now in an apartment with our plans in plan check towards rebuilding our home. I am still homeschooling our kids and my husband is currently teaching high school at a school that is the combination of both school he taught at before.

I know the current trend is to pick a word for the year. That doesn’t work for me. I’m one who uses the beginning of the year to make new goals. I learned that a long time ago from my dad. I also usually look back at the goals from the previous year. I did make goals in 2019 but with the craziness of the year I can’t find them. At our house in Paradise they had a spot on my bulletin board. This year I’m posting them here on my blog because then I will be able to find them next year as I expect this will be another crazy year. 2 goals I do remember from last new year were to have the kids moved into their own room and to read the Bible through. The kids are still in our bedroom but I did read the Bible through. Without further ado, here are my goals for 2020:

  • 1. Spiritual: Slow down and hear God more
  • * Read Chronologically through the Bible this year Finished
  • *Listen to the Sabbath School lesson with the Pine Knoll podcast each week. Did This
  • * Read through the Jesus Calling Devotional and keep a Gratitude Journal Not Quite. I did say what I was thankful for every day and I often read the days entry in the devotional but not daily.
  • 2. Physical: Feel healthy, fit and energized
  • *Continue drinking 12 cups of water per day Yep, I’m sure some days I fell short but mostly yes.
  • *Sleep at least 7 hours a night mmm…not sure on this. Pretty sure there are plenty of nights closer to 6.
  • *Exercise 3-5 days per week I did good on this until I took up the part time job. Then it was closer to 2 or 3 days a week.
  • *Cook whole foods Also fell apart some when I started the part-time job.
  • 3. Emotional: Make choices that help me have joy
  • *Get outside every day Yes
  • *Check in with God throughout the day Yep
  • *Do something fun/calming every day (art, music, puzzle, game, read to myself) …not every day but some.
  • *Get and give lots of hugs Yes, some days not as much as I should.
  • 4. Social: Stay connected with other adults so I don’t feel isolated I didn’t know covid was coming…wrong year for this goal.
  • *Weekly date night Yes
  • *Call my moms regularly through the week I kept up with my mom but calling my mother in law fell apart with the part-time job. Lunchtime is a rush now and sometimes we don’t have time to finish before we have to rush out the door so we don’t have time for that phone call. Hope we can bring this back after the school year is over.
  • *Keep in touch with friends near and far Ya…most of our friends have moved away and with covid everything is harder.
  • 5. Intellectual: Keep my mind sharp
  • *Practice an instrument at least twice a month Didn’t happen
  • *Make art at least once a month Maybe…if you count helping my preschooler with his art…
  • *Read a grown-up book each month If you count parts of a book? I learned a lot about permaculture…and keeping chickens and rabbits
  • 6. House: Make progress towards and hopefully finish our new house
  • *Stay in budget so far yes.
  • *Keep up with insurance receipts and requirements Caleb took over this.
  • *Plan a yard with year round fruit harvest, vegetable garden and activity and entertaining potential. Still working on this one but its fun to plan.
  • 7. Ari: Things I would like to help her towards
  • *Better disappointment management School with other kids has helped a ton with this and it is still there.
  • *Becoming a fluent reader Done
  • *Memorize addition facts Still needs work.C
  • *Move to sleeping in kids room Hasn’t happened yet.
  • 8. Cas: Helping him transition from toddler to “Big Kid”
  • *Potty train Done
  • *Wean Done
  • *Drop the last nap Done
  • *Move to sleeping in kids room Nope

I know, I make a lot of goals. They help me stay focused. Here’s to a fun 2020 and an interesting new decade.

Considering the year that was 2020… I think I did really well. We’ll try moving the kids to their own room when we move into our house. And I’m looking forward to working on our garden and animals and landscaping then as well. See next post for 2021 goals.

  1. Those are awesome goals! I was trying to read through the Bible in a year last year… I’m only 58 days behind… 😬. I start John tonight.
My one New Years Resolution/goal for 2020 is to “read one grown up book per month” which is why I got the Goodreads app!
