Snow!!!

Last Friday we woke up to nearly a foot of snow! It was amazing! We knew a storm was possible so I’d done our grocery shopping ahead of time and the school had called a snow day so we were able to all just hunker down at home. The kids had a blast in the snow! On Friday we experimented with what makes the best sled (a rubbermaid tub lid with a trash bag over it was the winner), and we built snowmen, snow chickens, a snow dog and snow bunnies as well as enjoyed a snow ball fight. Sabbath church was canceled so we had friends over (with real sleds which take the cake). We did more sledding, more snow ball fights, built another snowman, built a snow cave and a snow throne and, when it got dark, had light-saber battles in the snow. Good times! And there was always hot cocoa and the gas fireplace to warm up by when a break was needed. The only ones not enjoying the snow are…the pets. The snow means Chocolate has to stay in his bunny room and he doesn’t approve. He’s learned to nudge his door open and go exploring. The chickens stay in their chicken cave and scold me for allowing this cold white nuisance to cover the ground. But they’re still laying eggs so it’s all good. We’ll see how our fruit trees fared when the storm is all done. Today it turned into rain and melted a lot of the snow, but snow is back in the forecast through Wednesday. I’m enjoying it but the kids are over it. Ari said she was ready for it all to go away and the sun to come back and Cas didn’t go outside at all today.

What do you like to do in the snow?

  1. Lucky you got snow!!! Wonderful to hear everyone had fun playing with snow and warming up with hot chocolate.
I remember seeing a rabbit pet in one of your earlier posts but I didn’t pay too much attention to it. Does your rabbit live in its cage? My kids wants a rabbit so badly but I have to figure out their allergy situation. We recently bunny sat for a friend and they loved it.

    1. The allergies are real! In our duplex the rabbit lived in our living room and I had an air filter going at all times and I wore a mask when my daughter fed him his hay. We’re not allergic to the rabbit but…unfortunately their main meal is hay. Now he lives in the “rabbit room” which is a repurposed walk in closet. It keeps the hay in one room but the bunny can still be brought out to a playpen in another room to play. We also have an outdoor cage for him in the yard but he can’t live there year round. They can’t get wet and they don’t do well in temperatures above 80 degrees…so clear days from fall to spring, we take him out there for the day and bring him back in at night. If you have a coat closet or something you can repurpose the floor of to keep the hay and his feeding area/main cage in…we’ve found that helps a lot.

      1. Thanks Launa for sharing your experience! It’s great that your rabbit has a “rabbit room,” so the hay allergen is not spreading to the different parts of the house.
When I took an allergy test, it came up positive for timothy hay, which was totally unrelated to the allergy I was getting tested for. But I think the kids are allergic to rabbit fur…Elliot is allergic to cats and dogs. He’s adamant that he doesn’t care about it and can live with it. We found the cutest rabbit for adoption on petfinder. ugh…so cute but what about the allergies?!!!
Your rabbit is lucky to have its own closet and outdoor cage! That’s a fancy bunny life. 🙂

  2. Sledding is our favorite snow activity. I still need to make maple candy in the snow this year too.
Growing up in paradise I remember the occasional closures for snow. Here they don’t cancel anything for snow, only extreme cold, I think the cut off is -10. At that temp you don’t want to be outside at all!
I’m glad you got to have all the fun of a big snow at your new house! ❄️

    1. Ya…Caleb’s on his 4th snow day today and it’s kind of ridiculous at this point. There’s no snow on the roads and the stuff on the side is melting. But the school district called another snow day in case of black ice? I think the public school teachers are just milking the days off…ah well, I enjoy having Caleb home 🙂
